2013 Water Main Freeway Crossings Project

Project Details

In the second half of 2013, the City of Napa replaced several aged, leaking, and undersized freeway crossings with new mains to improve circulation within the water system. As highlighted in a July 2013 Napa Valley Register article, the Water Main Freeway Crossings Project employed the Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) method and made the following improvements within Salvador Avenue, Sierra Avenue, and F Street (see General Project Map):

  • Installation (via HDD) of a 24 inch Fusible C905 casing for a new 16 inch Fusible C905 water main across Highway 29 at Salvador Avenue and at Sierra Avenue
  • Installation (via HDD) of a 16 inch Fusible C905 casing for a 12 inch Fusible C900 water main across Highway 29 at F Street
  • Upgrade of an existing 6 inch water main within Sierra Avenue to a new 12 inch water main from Lassen Street to Jefferson Street
  • Installation (via HDD) of a new 12 inch Fusible C900 water main from Jefferson Street to Garfield Park
  • Upgrade of existing 6 inch and 8 inch water mains within Salvador Avenue to a new 12 inch water main from Byway East to Encina Drive
  • Upgrade of an existing 6 inch water main within F Street to a new 12 inch water main from the western terminus at Highway 29 to California Boulevard

While the public was requested to stay away from construction operations for safety reasons, the Water Division posted photos on this web page as construction proceeded. Drilling operations were completed by late summer 2013 along with the Salvador Avenue improvements. The full project, including the Sierra Avenue and F Street improvements, was completed by December 2013.
