City of Napa's Adapted Work Environment (AWE) SuccessJosh Stokes, Water Conservation SpecialistWhen the state began safer-at-home orders and businesses and offices across the state closed indefinitely, Napa's employees were faced with a problem: How do we continue giving our residents essential City services when our workplace environments and the way we do our jobs has to change?
Josh Stokes, Water Conservation Specialist in the City's Water Division, had to get creative to continue inspecting locations and conducting irrigation audits to improve water-use efficiency. He began using Google Earth to measure landscape areas and asked for verifiable photos from customers to seamlessly continue inspections. These inspections were essential to the 'Cash for Grass' Turf Replacement Rebate Program.
"When the pandemic hit and everything stopped, preserving our natural resources and protecting our residents' water became even more important," Josh said. "I'm here to help customers save water, whatever it takes." Now, masked and following physical distancing guidelines, Josh has resumed some in-person inspections, Water-Wise Home Surveys and irrigation audits. The City is able to provide our staff with the resources they need to work from home largely due to the CARES Act funding the City received in grants. Those funds also help provide public assistance to local community members, businesses and others that were economically impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.

City of Napa's Water Division Annual Hydrant Flushing Program Underway The City of Napa Water Division began our annual Hydrant Flushing Program during the first week of December 2020. This year’s program is expected to continue through April 2020. This year’s program started in the south by the college and continue generally from south to north. This year’s program will not include downtown and will not include the hillsides.
Hydrant flushing is an important maintenance activity to clean and flush the City water mains. Fire hydrants are opened to move a large volume of water at a higher-than-normal velocity through the mains. This procedure mobilizes particles and minerals that have settled over time and flushes them out of the system. This activity assists the City in maintaining the highest quality of water in the public water system.
