Stretching Our Water Supply Lack of rainfall in our Lake Hennessey watershed has reservoir volume a bit below average this winter, so let’s help stretch that supply throughout the year. For about three weeks starting next Monday, March 8, the system will be fed exclusively from the Lake. While not exactly expecting a March Miracle, the long-range forecast is calling for some March Moisture to benefit your lawn. So let’s all wait until true spring to kick on those automatic sprinklers. For year-round tips, check out sample irrigation schedules in the Napa Valley Watering Guide.

Changes Aesthetics of Drinking Water from Lake Hennessey The City recognizes the changing aesthetics of the drinking water, which is common with surface water supplies. Starting March 8th, our State Water Project supply source (Delta water) will be unavailable for three weeks to perform maintenance which necessitates using our Lake Hennessey water.
The taste and odor is not unique to Napa’s water sources - seasonal algae blooms are common to many surface waters. As algae dies off they release odor causing compounds. Most persons describe the aesthetics of this phenomenon as earthy and/or musty. The water treatment process removes the algae, although compounds that cause an unpleasant odor can be detected as low as 3 nanograms or parts per trillion by the average person. The drinking water, while potentially aesthetically undesirable, is tested and verified safe to drink.
As part of a $45-million upgrade of the treatment plant that treats Delta water, an ozone system was added that helps control the taste and odor. An ozone system or similar best available technology (BAT) treatment train is in the early stages of planning for the Hennessey Water Treatment Plant. For now, a few ways to minimize the odor when drinking water direct from your tap is: • make sure it is cold, or • add a squeeze of citrus (lemon, lime, orange) or cucumber.

Reduce Plastic DemandsIt is never too late to commit to a reusable-centered, low-plastic lifestyle! The COVID-19 pandemic is estimated to increase plastic demands by nearly 60% so now is the perfect time to get rid of plastic from your daily life:
? Use reusable bags while shopping ? Buy bulk whenever you can ? Buy real ingredients from the grocery store instead of packaged foods when possible ? When ordering takeout, tell the delivery service or restaurant that you do NOT want plastic cutlery or a plastic bag

City Clerk announces Board and Committee openings Want to make a difference in your community? Do you have expertise you could share? The City Clerk is accepting applications from Napa Residents for a total of two openings; one to serve on the Napa Valley Transportation Active Transportation Advisory Committee; and one to serve on the Napa County Mosquito Abatement District Board. Please submit application by 5:00 p.m. Friday, March 12, 2021.
Applications are available online for submission – visit www.cityofnapa.org/BoardsandCommissions (https://www.cityofnapa.org/268/Boards-Commissions) for more information about the opening and the guidelines and requirements.
The Napa Valley Transportation Authority (NVTA) Active Transportation Advisory Committee (ATAC) is an Advisory Committee that is responsible to promote and encourage safe bicycling and walking to further Napa’s goal of becoming a bicycle- and pedestrian-friendly city. The Committee consists of eleven members: four members representing the City of Napa; two members represent the County of Napa; two members represent the City of American Canyon; and the Town of Yountville, City of St. Helena, and City of Calistoga each have one member to represent their respective jurisdictions. The Committee meets every other month on the 4th Monday at 5:30 p.m., currently via Zoom.
The Napa County Mosquito Abatement District Board is the Governing Body of the Mosquito Abatement District which provides mosquito/vector control services for the County of Napa. The Board consists of six members: one of whom represents the City of Napa. The City Council of the City of Napa appoints one member to the Board of Trustees to serve as the City’s representative. All other members represent the other governmental jurisdictions in the County of Napa in addition to one member representing the County at-large. The City of Napa representative to the Napa County Mosquito Abatement District Board must be a resident of the City of Napa. Meetings are held the second Wednesday of each month at 7:00 p.m.
The City of Napa recruits throughout the year for interested residents to serve on a variety of boards and commissions that examine issues of community concern. Volunteers appointed to serve on a board or commission help City Council and city departments examine issues and, in turn, shape the future of Napa. Board and Commission members are appointed by the City Council and terms vary but are typically either two or three years. Most board members must be city residents and registered voters.
To find out more about the different commissions, committees and boards and to apply online, visit https://www.cityofnapa.org/268/Boards-Commissions. For more information contact Tiffany Carranza, City Clerk, at (707) 257-9503.
