Remembering Napa's Former Mayor, Ed Henderson

Our hearts and prayers go out to the family and friends of former Mayor Ed Henderson, who passed away in Napa yesterday. Mayor Henderson served the City of Napa as mayor from 1997 to 2005.

“Ed was Mister Napa,” said Mayor Scott Sedgley. "He was an educator, activist, mentor and someone who truly cared about Napa and its residents. We have lost a great person," he added. 

Former Mayor Jill Techel said, “Mayor Henderson was a person who could light up a room and make everyone feel welcome. He added a bit of humor to the job of Mayor and made himself available to everyone.” 

More information will be made available through the Henderson family as they finalize plans.

Community Climate Survey - Now Live!

Each year, the City of Napa conducts a Community Climate Survey so we can better understand the concerns and opinions of City residents regarding City infrastructure, services and more.

We administer this survey in English and in Spanish via phone, text and email to Napa residents. If you receive a call, text or email, rest assured that this is a legitimate effort on behalf of the City to learn more from you - our residents - and we encourage you to participate! 

Traffic Safety Updates

Signal Changes Happenings Around Town

Here in the City of Napa, traffic safety is of the utmost importance! We want to make sure that every driver, pedestrian and cyclist feels safe and comfortable transporting around our city.

The City is currently implementing multiple systems to help keep our residents safe on the road.

First up: Leading Pedestrian Intervals (LPI)
LPI allows pedestrians to walk 3-4 seconds before a light changes and a vehicle can turn into a crosswalk. This gives the pedestrian a head start, allowing more time for drivers to see them. There is already one LPI at the Soscol and 1st Street intersection and the City is preparing to activate others in heavy pedestrian locations. 

LPI’s have little to no impact on drivers and have been proved to reduce pedestrian/vehicle crashes by as much as 60% while not being costly. Learn more about current and upcoming signal changes here.

Annual Hydrant Flushing Program Begins Monday, December 5th

The City's annual hydrant flushing program begins Monday, Dec. 5!  Here are a few important reminders about the process:

- This program may cause periods of discolored water and reduced water pressure in localized areas where flushing is being conducted.

- Flushing operations may activate low-pressure alarms on automatic fire sprinkler systems due to temporary reductions in water pressure. 

- Commercial customers, especially businesses that serve the public, should be aware of the water quality while flushing is taking place in their area. 

The Water Division will update the City’s website regularly to provide a map of the region being flushed each day and a map of the region that will be flushed next, to help keep the public up to date on our progress: www.CityOfNapa.org/HydrantFlushing

Reminder: Monthly Sandbag Station Operations at City Corp Yard

Next Self-Serve Sandbags - December 3, 2022

It is always a good time to start preparing for the rainy season now!

Free, self-serve sandbags are available to city residents at the City’s Corporation Yard at 770 Jackson Street on the first Saturday of each month from October through March, from 9 AM - 1 PM. 

Be sure to bring gloves - sand and sandbags will be provided!

Sandbag operations will also open as needed at Memorial Stadium parking lot when the National Weather Service has declared a local Flood Watch.

Outdoor Dining Updates

The City of Napa made further strides to extend the temporary Napa Al Fresco parklets program into a permanent dining option for local businesses at the November 15, 2022, Council Meeting. The parklets program, which enables business owners primarily in the downtown area to utilize the public parking space in the street in front of their business once they’ve installed a platform that levels the area with the sidewalk, will be rolled out later this fiscal year (FY). 

While many details of the new permanent program are still in development, the City cemented the program’s future at the Council Meeting with the approval of the Outdoor Dining Fee.

The City Clerk is accepting applications from Napa Residents for a total of seven (7) openings:

• two to serve on the Community Development Block Grant Advisory Committee
• two to serve on the Planning Commission
• one to serve on the Napa County Library Commission
• one to serve on the Napa County Sanitation District
• one to serve on the Napa County Mosquito Abatement District Board

Napa Valley Drought Contingency Plan

The City of Napa is committed to keeping our valley water-secure while this historic drought persists. This process will be guided by the Napa Valley Drought Contingency Plan, which was just completed by a collaborative task force made up of several Napa Valley agencies including the County, multiple cities and towns, Napa Sanitation District and U.S. Bureau of Reclamation.

The plan includes:

• An assessment of the current water supply
• How the water supply will be monitored in the future
• Drought mitigation plans
• Drought response actions and implementation
