City Manager Mike Parness Announces Retirement

City Manager Mike Parness announced earlier this week he will retire on July 27, 2018, after over 11 years of service to the City of Napa. He had hoped to serve through the rest of the calendar year, but it has become necessary to schedule another knee surgery and delaying further is not an option.

The Napa City Council has appointed Napa Police Chief Steve Potter as the Interim City Manager, which will become effective immediately following the retirement of current City Manager Mike Parness on July 27th. Concurrently with Potter beginning his new responsibilities as Interim City Manager, he will be stepping down from the Police Chief position; and Robert Plummer, recently hired from the Las Vegas Metro Police Department, will begin his service as the new Police Chief for the City of Napa.

Main Street Boat Dock

Community Day at Boat Dock - July 7th!

The City of Napa is excited to host a Community Day on Saturday, July 7, at the Main Street Boat Dock, in partnership with Tideline Marine Group. This event is one of many planned this year, as we begin to provide recreational opportunities and transportation along the beautiful Napa River for residents and visitors. This private-partnership with Tideline Marine Group will help increase the utilization of this public facility as well as provide maritime expertise and oversight of the boat dock.

On Saturday, July 7th, come and check out some of the new offerings that are currently available at the boat dock, including kayak and stand up paddle board demos! From 10am – 2pm, visit Napa Valley Paddle and Enjoy Napa Valley right above the boat dock, and sign up for small group kayak and paddle board demos.

Tideline Marine Group’s 36-foot catamaran, Kestrel, will be offering mini river tours on the Napa River. Sign up to participate next to the Main Street Dock.

This summer, all these recreational services will be available at the dock on weekends and during the week.

Pacific Gas & Electric

PG&E: High Fire-Threat Areas and Temporary Power Outages

As the 2018 fire season gets into full swing in California, Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) is reaching out to customers who live in or near high fire-threat areas to let them know that, if extreme fire danger conditions occur, it may be necessary for PG&E to temporarily turn off power to their neighborhood or community for safety.

•Learn whether home or business is in or near a high fire-threat area on the CPUC High Fire-Threat District map (http://cpuc.ca.gov/FireThreatMaps/). Customers also can visit pge.com/wildfiresafety to enter their address and find out if their home or business is served by an electric line that may be turned off for safety during high wildfire threats.

•Update contact information at pge.com/mywildfirealerts or by calling 1-866-743-6589 during normal business hours. PG&E will use this information to alert customers in advance of turning off their electric service for safety, when and where possible.

•Prepare for and practice an emergency plan to keep yourself, your families and/or employees emergency-ready and safe during an outage. Information and tips including a safety plan checklist are available at pge.com/wildfiresafety.

Recycling Fluorescent Bulbs

LESS Program - Recycling CFL Bulbs and  at a Time!

Since April of 2011, the City of Napa has spearheaded an effort to collect and properly dispose of and recycle end-of-life compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs) and tubes. In the now seven years of the program, over 44,000 CFLs and 38,000 tubes have been collected and recycled (with 2017-2018 totals being the highest ever). This translates into over 16.7 tons of mercury-containing fluorescent lighting being properly disposed of and recycled through the program!

Program History: The program began as a true public-private, multi-agency effort with start-up funding coming from the Department of Energy and PG&E supplemented and sustained by City of Napa solid waste/recycling rate payers. It also was practicum project for Leadership Napa Valley that helped lead to five voluntary retail partners to accept residential CFLs and tubes from the public and mail them to a City-contracted mercury-lighting recycler (current retail partners are: Central Valley Builders Supply, Napa Electric, Orchard Supply Hardware, Clark’s Ace Hardware and Zeller’s Ace Hardware).

Public Works Staff - Goodman Library

Goodman Library Repair Earns Award from APWA

We are proud of Napa's historic treasures, and restoring the Goodman Library has been a labor of love for all of us in Public Works. Over the last year, many of you have seen the transformation of the building that was damaged in the 2014 earthquake. We're excited to announce the library repair project has been honored as the nationwide winner of the American Public Works Association (APWA) Historical Restoration/Preservation, less than $5 million category!

This follows another recognition earlier this year when the project was awarded the Historical Project of the Year award from APWA Northern California Chapter. This award is a testament to the hard work and dedication that the project team showed throughout the course of the project. The Goodman Library has been a fixture in our downtown for more than 100 years and we are thrilled it will continue to serve future generations.
