Another Successful America Recycles Day in Napa!

Thank you, Napa, for another successful America Recycles Day event! Once again, we have shown what a giving community we are!

On Saturday, November 10th, the City and County sponsored a coat, costume and shoe drive in celebration of America Recycles Day at Redwood Plaza Shopping Center. Residents were asked to bring in “gently used” coats and costumes or shoes (in any condition) in exchange for an indoor recycling bin, bag or kitchen compost pail for their home or business. This year, approximately 600-620 coats and 120-150 costumes were collected during the four-hour event! Napa Salvation Army received the coats and will distribute the coats to needy families over the next few weeks, particularly at their Thanksgiving celebration. The collected costumes will become part of the City’s Halloween costume exchange next year.

For the third year, the Napa America Recycles Day event also included collection of used shoes (in any condition). The community participation was significant - 822 pairs were collected! The collected shoes will be shipped to a non-profit organization called “Soles4Souls” that distributes used shoes to disaster victims and/or disadvantaged people in this country and abroad. This organization will even find homes for single shoes (as they serve one-footed clients as well) and will recycle any shoe beyond use or repair. The City is also coordinating the shipment of over 600 pairs collected by New Technology High School and an additional 300-500 pairs collected by a local Napa Valley Unified School District student. So, all told, Napa will be shipping out 1,700-2,000 shoes for a second life for those in need!

Camp Fire - How You Can Help!

We know our community is one known to help - and we know you are looking for ways to help our Butte County neighbors.

Here is a great list of ways you can send help to those affected by the Camp Fire. Our hearts are with those who have lost so much due to this tragic fire.

  • Red Cross: Monetary donations can be made to the American Red Cross by calling 1-800-RED-CROSS or texting REDCROSS to 90999 to make a $10 donation.
  • California Community Foundation’s Wildfire Relief Fund: Supports victims by helping to rebuild homes and providing financial assistance to those who need medical and mental treatment. Donate here.
  • North Valley Community Foundation: Fund goes to support the needs of the evacuation centers who opened their doors to house fire victims who lost their homes or had to evacuate. Donate here.
  • United Way of Northern California: United Way established a NorCal Disaster Relief Fund to help victims. To make a donation, text BUTTEFIRE to 91999.
  • California Fire Foundation: Provides financial support to surviving families of fallen firefighters and firefighters who are battling at the front lines of the blaze. Donate here.
  • Airbnb: The home-rental company started a program that asks users to open their homes to those hit hardest by the fire. Hosts in regions marked on the map will offer their homes for free until November 29, 2018. Offer is good for displaced residents and relief workers.
  • North Valley Animal Disaster Group: Works jointly with public and private agencies and organizations in the area help in the safety and well-being of all domestic animals and farm animals, including wildlife, affected by a disaster. This includes assistance with emergency temporary shelter, evacuation, and medical care. Donate here.
  • Volunteering: The Red Cross has a volunteer page for those who want to pitch in above and beyond donations.

Napa Art Walk Call for Artists - Only Two Weeks Left!

There are only two weeks left to apply for our Napa Art Walk Call for Artists! Deadline for submissions is 10PM PST on Friday, November 30. Learn more and submit your work here!

The Napa Art Walk is a curated walking tour program that showcases regularly rotating installation art throughout downtown Napa, California. This program is designed to enhance the local environment and promote the understanding and enjoyment of public art by inviting artists to temporarily exhibit select works in downtown Napa. The first Art Walk launched in 2009, and collections rotate every two years; the 2019-21 exhibition will be the sixth rotation in this program.

Compost Facility Concrete Pour

Covered Compost Operation and Stormwater Improvement Project

In the early morning hours of today (Friday, November 16), a major concrete pour was completed for half of the slab in the new covered compost area at our Materials Diversion Facility. Using two of the largest concrete pumping trucks in California, crews placed 200 cubic yards of concrete per hour for a total of 1,100 cubic yards! To give you an idea of how much concrete that is, the City’s sidewalk program installs about 1,200 cubic yards of concrete per year! Approximately 500,000 pounds of rebar was used in the slab. The other half of the slab will be poured the week after Thanksgiving.

This phase is part of the $10-million construction project to install a covered aerated static pile compost system and stormwater improvements at the City’s Materials Diversion Facility. Pipes are under the concrete floor of the compost bunker with the small pipe embedded up into the floor with the top flush with the floor surface.  Each bunker is 300 feet long by 90 feet wide with these air pipes spaced every 5 feet along the length (60 total air pipes in each bunker!). Compost will be placed 9 feet high in each bunker with up to a 1 foot biofilter layer of finished compost on the top to absorb emissions and odors. The air system from below and an irrigation system on top are automated to provide optimal conditions for the active phase of composting for 22 days. Then the product will be moved to a curing pile. The system will accommodate commercial food waste collection and provide more efficient composting with reduced emissions from our current operation.  Overaa Construction is under contract for the project and is on schedule to have these bunkers completed in early 2019.
