Earth Day Returns to Napa

Sunday, April 28, from 11PM - 4PM

The City will join dozens of other exhibitors on Sunday, April 28th from 11AM to 4PM in the Oxbow Commons for the community’s annual Earth Day celebration.  Water and Recycling staff will educate festival attendees about how they can make a difference locally.  There will be fun activities for the whole family, include a special Drive Electric display, and of course delicious local food, beer, and wines.  Music and dancers will provide the entertainment, including two bands who will also be playing at this year’s BottleRock!  Best of all, the event’s beverage sales fund bus grants that allow Napa County students to enjoy environmental field trips.  The event is hosted by the Environmental Education Coalition of Napa County (EECNC).  Full details can be found at EarthDayNapa.com.

Water Pledge Mayors Challenge

Take the Mayor’s Challenge in April!

After a sixth-place finish last year, the City is looking to win this year’s National Mayor’s Challenge for Water Conservation. Sponsored by the Wyland Foundation, this friendly competition uses a series of online pledges at mywaterpledge.com to see which city can be the most water-wise. In addition to water savings, incentives include a grand prize of $3,000 toward your home utility bills, home irrigation kits, gift cards, and a chance for your favorite local charity to win a 2019 Toyota Highlander Hybrid. Anytime during April simply fill out the online pledge to make smart water choices. While this past winter was bountiful, the City knows how variable California’s climate is and how important it is for us to use our precious water resources efficiently. Let’s win this challenge! Young Fawn and Mother Deer

Public Service Announcement from the Napa Wildlife Rescue & Napa PD!

Fawn season is quickly approaching and baby deer will be popping up around Napa County. Every year we receive calls about “abandoned” fawns. Mother deer will leave their babies alone for up to 12 hours at a time, only returning for brief periods to feed and clean their offspring. The mother leaves during this time to graze and rest; she’ll keep her distance from the scent-less infant so as not to alert predators. An inexperienced mother deer may leave her baby in an odd place like your front porch or under an RV, but she will eventually be back to move it.

Please don’t approach or touch a lone fawn and NEVER feed it. If you are unsure of its well-being, please call our Hawkline at (707) 224-HAWK (4295) for advice.

Organics De-Packager

New Grant-Funded Organics De-Packagers Equipment at Napa's Material Diversion Facility

In 2017, Napa Recycling & Waste Services (NRWS) pursued a grant from the State (CalRecycle) for a $420,000 piece of processing equipment known as an “organics de-packager.” With the support and permission from the City, NRWS was successful in its grant application and the grant-funded equipment was delivered to the Materials Diversion Facility (MDF) in late 2018 and has been operational for about three to four months now. The equipment functions as its name implies – to literally separate plastic and paper packaging away from otherwise compostable organics trapped in such packaging. Think about expired or contaminated (e.g., sandwiches in plastic trays, cereal in boxes with inner liners, etc.) as examples of potentially compostable organic materials that would otherwise be headed towards landfill disposal. NRWS can now reach out to local and regional food generators (grocery stores, big box stores, hotels, catering companies, etc.) and offer this new option.

The organics de-packager has already been a great help in capturing any contamination from commercial food composting routes (both from Napa and other jurisdiction programs using the City’s MDF) as they are all run through the equipment prior to active composting. This in turn has resulted in a residue/contamination rates of less than 1% (which is then addressed by other parts of the organics pre-processing system). In the longer term, Napa will be well prepared for the impacts of Assembly Bill 1826 and Senate Bill 1383 which will require increasing capture of organics from commercial generators throughout the State.
