Fire Explorers host Holiday photo fundraiser

City of Napa Fire Explorer Post 220 will host a "Spirit of the Holiday" photo event benefitting the Veronica Zimmerman Trust Fund and the Napa Food Bank. The event will be held on Sunday December 7 from 11am to 6pm at Fire Station #1, 930 Seminary Street in Downtown Napa. 

Attendees will have the opportunity to have a holiday photo taken with Santa Claus on an antique fire engine. Families, groups and individuasl are welcome. The cost is $5.00 for each photo, with a $2 discount per photo for each donation of two cans of food for the Napa Food Bank. 

Veronica Zimmerman was a local youth who was killed in an auto crash this fall.

 
Sandbag pickup available first Saturday of the month

The City of Napa’s distribution of sandbags for winter weather preparedness will continue Saturday, December 6, 2008, at the City’s Corporation Yard at 770 Jackson Street, one block west of Soscol. Sand and sandbags are provided at no charge to those who wish to keep them on hand this winter in case of flooding.

This is a self-service program with sand and sandbags provided by the City. Residents should bring a shovel and gloves and be prepared to fill their own bags. The event will run from 9am to 1pm.

Spare the Air day means no fire in the fireplace

The Bay Area Air Quality Management District has instituted a policy that prohibits the use of a fireplace on Winter Spare the Air Days. This prohibition is in effect during the winter season from November 1, 2008, through February 28, 2009.  To know when fireplaces use is banned, sign up for e-mail alerts and/or automatic telephone alerts at http://www.sparetheair.org/.

On Sunday November 9, 2008, the CBS program 60 Minutes aired a segment exposing how some of the millions of computer monitors, cell phones and other electronic refuse generated in the US is shipped illegally to China, impacting the environment and the people who salvage the components. The 60 Minutes broadcast may have been alarming to local residents who are concerned about the proper disposal of these materials and may wonder where Napa's e-waste ends up.

Heritage Napa

The City of Napa is proud to sponsor Heritage Napa, a historic resources survey, funded in part by a grant from the California Office of Historic Preservation, that will identify neighborhoods of historic importance and explore themes, events, people, and places significant to the history of Napa. Heritage Napa will begin with a general city-wide historic resource survey, identifying neighborhoods and areas of historic importance and prioritizing them for future recordation and evaluation. A historic context statement will be produced.The first of two Heritage Napa community meetings will focus on the city-wide survey and context statement currently underway. Heritage Napa Community Meeting #1 will be held December 16, 2008 from5:30 pm to 7:00pm in the Community Room at the Napa City-County Library, 580 Coombs Street.
