The Napa Police Department is one of the oldest Police Departments in the state
of California. It was originally established in 1875, just three years after the
town itself was incorporated and only 25 years after California became a state.
The very first Chief of Police was Jerome B. Walden and he commanded a force of
four Police Officers, two Night Watchmen, and a Town Marshal. The Napa Police Department is organized within six (6)
bureaus: Administration, Patrol, Crime Prevention/Youth Services,
Investigations, and Central Dispatch. Each bureau has a Police Commander in
charge of its overall operation. By clicking on the bureau's icon on the home
page of this website, you can learn more about the functions and programs of
each bureau and communicate directly with the person in charge.I am very proud of the fine women and men of the Napa Police Department who work very hard to keep Napa as safe, secure, and livable as we can. I also know that they are very proud to serve you, our citizens and visitors, with compassion, enthusiasm, and professionalism. The Mission Statement best sums up who we are and what we do. I encourage you to review it and then let us know how we are doing. Our success can only be measured by your satisfaction. Richard Melton, Chief of Police
