City Clerk announces Commission openings

Want to make a difference in your community? Do you have expertise you could share? The City Clerk is accepting applications from Napa Residents for a total of three openings to serve on the Planning Commission. Deadline for submission of applications is 5:00 p.m. Friday, December 1, 2017.

The Planning Commission is advisory to the City Council on matters related to land use and planning, particularly related to amendments to the City's General Plan policies and Zoning Ordinance. The Planning Commission is the decision-making body for specified land use actions, including conditional use permits and design review permits. One of the three appointments shall fill the requirement of “design professional”. Applicants must be City of Napa residents and registered voters. The Planning Commission meets regularly on the first and third Thursday of each month at 5:30 p.m. in the Council Chambers, located at City Hall, 955 School Street.

The City of Napa recruits throughout the year for interested residents to serve on a variety of boards and commissions that examine issues of community concern. Volunteers appointed to serve on a board or commission help City Council and city departments examine issues and, in turn, shape the future of Napa. Board and Commission members are appointed by the City Council and terms vary but are typically either two or three years. Most board members must be city residents and registered voters.

Napa Valley Community Foundation Approves $3 million in Emergency Financial Assistance Grants

Napa Valley Community Foundation (NVCF) approved distributions from its Disaster Relief Fund totaling $3 million to help local workers facing serious financial hardships because of the economic slow-down brought about by the devastating fires of recent weeks in Napa Valley. Cash aid is now available for low-to-moderate income Napa County workers who need financial assistance, as a result of the fires, to help pay for: rent or security deposits; utility and phone bills; auto loans; childcare; or healthcare expenditures. At this time, the Emergency Financial Assistance (EFA) program is taking applications until November 9. Through October 31, those who wish to apply for the EFA program should visit the Local Assistance Center (LAC) at 2751 Napa Valley Corporate Drive, Building A, in Napa. Thereafter, residents facing financial hardship because of the fires should call to make an appointment at one of the following community-based nonprofit organizations, each of which is already working with prospective EFA clients that were referred through the LAC in recent days: Cope Family Center (707-252-1123); McPherson Neighborhood Family Resource Center (a program of On the Move, 707-251-9432); and Up Valley Family Centers, with offices in Calistoga and St. Helena (707-965-5010 x 403).

Debris Handling and Removal Information

Hazardous Debris and Ash

Debris and ash from residential and commercial fires is likely hazardous and may contain toxic substances due to the presence of synthetic and hazardous materials. Napa County is working to secure assistance from State agencies that will ensure proper handling and disposal of household hazardous waste products as well as debris and ash from the fire. It is expected that State agencies will be in Napa as soon as next week to start. Please be patient as this process unfolds. In the meantime, in order to protect your health and the health of your neighbors, you should NOT begin any debris removal at this time. Please refer to the advisories regarding safety precautions related to re-entry and debris ash. Until all hazardous wastes have been removed and the property is cleared of debris and all contaminated soil has been removed, no demolition permits or building permits will be issued.

Green Waste and Compostable Material

Residents may bring green waste and yard trimmings to the Napa Recycling & Composting Facility but we want to remind you that there is a fee ($18 minimum charge or $44/ton). Alternatively, you can use your normal brown curbside compost cart (or carts) for a wide range of compostable materials (including yard trimmings, food scraps & soiled paper) at no additional charge. We encourage curbside collection of green waste as there are vehicle count & tonnage limits on self-haul loads at our recycling and composting facility.

Residential Waste Service Information

For those who lost power last week and may need to dispose of spoiled food from their refrigerator/freezer: you can put all spoiled food - without the packaging - in your yard waste cans. Please remove the packaging first and place the packaging in the trash (film plastic) or recycling (rigid plastic) - and the food scraps in the brown compost cart. Advisory Evacuation for parts of City of Napa

THIS IS NOT A MANDATORY EVACUATION ORDER. An ADVISORY means that residents should consider preparing for the potential for having to leave should the incident worsen.

An EVACUATION ADVISORY has been issued by The Napa County Sheriff’s Department. The advisory includes areas East of Silverado Trail, between Trancas Street and Soscol Avenue, East of Soscol Avenue between Siverado Trail and West Imola Avenue, East of HWY 221between West Imola Avenue and HWY 29, East of HWY 29 between HWY 221 and Jameson Canyon Road, North of Jameson Canyon Road between HWY 12 and the Napa/Solano County line.

3. Mandatory Evacuation: You are in jeopardy and should leave the area immediately. If you choose to remain, you may be on your own as emergency personnel likely will not be able to help you.
