Safety During the Storm

Helpful Safety Tips

During a major storm, it's easy to get caught up in the moment and do unsafe things. Here are some important tips for staying safe:

  • Avoid driving or walking in areas that are subject to sudden flooding.
  • Never try to cross a flowing stream where water is above your knees. Even water as shallow as 6 inches may produce a strong current that could sweep you away.
  • Never drive over a flooded road, there may be unseen washouts or debris. If your car is disabled you may be both stranded and trapped.
  • If your car stalls, abandon it immediately and seek higher ground.
  • Do not "sight see" in flooded areas. Do not drive around barricades. You may be subject to substantial fines.
  • Keep children with you, be aware that teenagers in particular may be tempted to get too close to floodwaters. This not only places them in jeopardy, but inhibits public safety personnel from assisting those that need it.
  • Avoid unnecessary trips. If you must travel during the storm, dress in warm, loose layered clothing and use appropriate gear to stay dry. Advise others of your destination.
  • Use the telephone only for family emergencies or to report dangerous conditions.
  • Stay informed by using this website, local and regional radio and television, weather radio, and other reliable sources for emergency information and instructions from the EOC.
  • If you are requested to evacuate, please do so. Make arrangements to stay with friends or relatives, or use a shelter provided by the City in cooperation with the Red Cross. Be sure to bring any necessary medication and a change of clothing with you.
