[ARCHIVED] Building ADUs in Napa & Sonoma Counties: Live Audience Q&A Session: Tuesday, December 15

ADU Workshop

As local Napa and Sonoma County homeowners and residents continue to navigate the challenges of a pandemic that has curtailed our ability to meet and socialize with friends and loved ones even during the holiday season, the nonprofit Napa Sonoma ADU Center is here to help homeowners think about how to create flexible housing options through accessory dwelling units which can help build our community both now and in the future.

Nationwide, multi-generational living has increased as adult children move back home to live with elderly parents or in-laws move in with their children and grandchildren. Accessory dwelling units, also known as granny flats, backyard cottages, in-law suites, and more are a smart way that many local homeowners make this kind of living arrangement sustainable over the long term. And homeowners who have ADUs find that they are the perfect haven for family members during a time when so many families are kept apart due to shelter-in-place rules and travel restrictions.

The Napa Sonoma ADU Center is now launching its free ADU Winter Webinar Series for homeowners, housing professionals, and others interested in accessory dwelling units, to walk through the process of building an accessory dwelling unit and answer local homeowner questions on the topic.

The next webinar, “Building ADUs in Napa & Sonoma Counties: Live Audience Q&A Session,” will take place on Tuesday, December 15 from 6:00 - 7:30 pm. All homeowners in both Napa and Sonoma Counties -- as well as housing professionals and others -- are invited to register to attend at: https://napasonomaadu.org/aduevents to learn the nuts and bolts of building an accessory dwelling unit including hearing lessons learned and key tips from ADU experts and local government staff.

The December 15 webinar will cover key tips for building ADUs and will focus a large segment of time on live audience Q&A, open to the public to ask questions directly to city staff from the planning & building divisions of the cities of Napa and Santa Rosa. The information will be useful for homeowners from outside Napa and Santa Rosa as well.

More ADU winter webinars are on the way, including How to Finance Your ADU, coming on a date to be determined in January, and How to Build an ADU in Sebastopol on Thursday, February 11 at 11:00 am.

All ADU winter webinars will be added on the website at: https://napasonomaadu.org/aduevents and advertised via the Napa Sonoma ADU Center newsletter and social media, which you can sign up for at the website https://napasonomaadu.org/.

Spanish language translation will be provided via Zoom. Se proporcionará interpretación al español a través de Zoom.

The Napa Sonoma ADU Center is a fiscally-sponsored project of Napa Valley Community Foundation with support from Community Foundation Sonoma County that provides concrete tools and support to homeowners to catalyze their ADU builds -- and collaborates with local planning and building departments to help streamline their ADU planning, permitting, and approval processes.

All past ADU webinars developed by the nonprofit are available recorded and on demand on the website as well.

Renée Schomp, Director of the nonprofit Napa Sonoma ADU Center, shares that “At the Napa Sonoma ADU Center, we believe that by building an ADU, you’re investing in the future of your community. We are excited to bring this engaging webinar series to Napa and Sonoma County homeowners to help folks better understand the planning and building process in their community.”

Homeowners often cite opportunities to keep their family together and build wealth as their primary reasons for building an ADU on their property. Some homeowners see ADUs as a source of rental income in the near term, and a downsizing opportunity in the future that would allow them to rent out the primary dwelling for

retirement income. And the COVID-19 health crisis has further underlined the desire for local homeowners to create housing, either as a safe haven for elderly parents or as an independent living space for adult children.

The Napa Sonoma ADU Center is excited to bring this engaging free ADU Winter Webinar Series to homeowners and housing professionals alike at a time when building more housing in our community is needed most.
