Hello again from the Economic Development Newsletter! Summer is here, which means it's the perfect time to shop and eat locally. And we have so much to celebrate here in Napa!

The City is commemorating its 150th anniversary as it officially incorporated on March 23, 1872. Through the last century and a half, Napa has adapted, struggled and thrived. And in 2022, Napa is working to create an inclusive and service-minded municipality that serves every person who works, plays and lives here. We’re kicking off some fun events this summer so stay tuned to celebrate with us.

June is also Pride Month, which is a time to honor the struggles and achievements of the LGBTQ+ community in Napa and around the world. We pride ourselves in building a community that is all-embracing and supportive, regardless of where you come from, what you do for work or who you love. I hope all of Napa’s businesses will embrace a welcoming and accepting spirit this month and every month.

In this newsletter, we discuss some exciting, upcoming events, important resources for composting requirements and spotlight one of our up-and-coming commercial corridors, Lincoln Avenue. Thanks for being part of the Napa business community!

Corridor Callout: Lincoln Avenue

Lincoln Avenue, a diverse corridor for daily needs from food to fitness, is one of the City’s focus areas determined in the 2040 General Plan. In the coming years, Napa hopes to transform the commercial street into a community-oriented “main street” with a vision of adding apartments, offices, restaurants and storefronts while improving walkability and street conditions. All of the excitement to come adds to the already-thriving businesses on Lincoln Avenue that make it a great local destination.

In honor of Pride Month and raising up inclusivity, the Napa Economic Development team wants to call out that Lincoln Avenue houses the Napa LGBTQ Connection Office. LGBTQ Connection engages with community members and their families to increase the safety, visibility and wellbeing of LGBTQ+ residents.

At the Napa office, the community nonprofit offers free on-site LGBTQ-friendly counseling every Tuesday and Thursday. There are no forms or requirements to receive the counseling — you just have to show up or email [email protected] to make an appointment. They also host a youth book club that meets every third Thursday of the month to talk about all things LGBTQ+ in books: authors, themes, characters and more.

Lincoln Avenue has more to offer beyond great resources for our LGBTQ+ community. Start your morning off by working up a sweat at Napa Hot Yoga. The local studio offers a number of high-intensity workout classes like Hot Pilates to focused classes like Deep Stretch & Meditation.

Replenish all those burned off calories by rewarding yourself with a delicious lunch at the Red Rock Cafe & Back Door BBQ — a Napa favorite for decades. Or, drop by Papa Joe’s Pizza to enjoy family-owned, counter-serve pizza made with hand-rolled dough and local ingredients.

Round out your afternoon by stopping into Garaventa’s Florist to pick up beautiful floral arrangements for a loved one or by the locally owned Clark’s Ace Hardware for any houseware or construction project needs.

Try your luck at California Blackjack or Texas Hold 'Em at the Ace & Vine casino and restaurant. Open 24 hours, Ace & Vine is a one-stop shop for gaming, entertainment, great food and delicious drinks. Plus, they are hosting a Drag Brunch in honor of Pride Month.

And remember to keep your eye out this month for the 29 Pride banners, funded by the Tourism Improvement District, that will be hung up around downtown to proclaim the City’s support for our LGBTQ+ community members!

Happy Birthday, Napa!

Did you know that Napa is celebrating two birthdays this year? The City of Napa is celebrating its 150th anniversary of our incorporation as a city, which formalized the local government. But we are also celebrating the 175th anniversary of our founding!

The Napa Valley was originally home to the native indigenous Wappo tribes, who were known for their basket making and hunter-gatherer skills. We owe part of the City’s growth to the Napa River, which runs through the middle of our City.

The original town site was mapped out by Nathan Coombs in 1847 after receiving land in Napa as payment for construction work. The town site included the land between present-day Brown Street and the river, as it was a natural trade and transportation center. Travelers, farmers and industrial workers from all over the world traveled through Napa, bringing a diversity of goods and people to the area.

175 years later, Napa is still a thriving, business-friendly city that works to support every person who works or lives here. Napans have a deep pride for our home and the generations of families who came before them, shaping and caring for the community.

With so much to celebrate, be sure to check out a Napa City Council Proclamation later this summer marking the City of Napa's 150th birthday celebration! DoNapa is also hosting a ticketed dinner for the 175th on Saturday, June 11 and a free, family-friendly festival at Oxbow Commons on Saturday, September 10. Learn more about those events here.

Resource Spotlight: Composting Resources

Here in Napa, we care about our planet and supporting our businesses. So, we love when those two things come together!

As you may know, organic recycling program law SB 1383 went into effect at the beginning of 2022 and a commercial organic recycling law AB 1826 has been in effect since 2016. These laws mean businesses are required to compost their food waste and food-soiled paper products to help reduce trash in our landfills.

But Napa wants to ensure we’re setting you up for success. After all, CalRecycle reports that nearly 20% of what Californians throw away could actually be recycled as food waste. For the state to reach its recycling and composting goals, it is important for businesses to prioritize recycling food waste.

Kendra Bruno, a waste prevention specialist with the City’s Recycling Division, is working closely with businesses to ensure they are in compliance with the law and doing their part to conserve the Earth’s resources. She said it’s important for business leadership to get on board with the recycling program early to help employees adjust to the new requirements.

“Once you start understanding the program, it’s so much easier to compost than it is to recycle,” Bruno said. “But getting open to the program and overcoming what we call the ‘ick factor’ is important. Upper leadership can help overcome this. Not only is it environmentally positive, but it comes with a better financial bottom line.”

Bruno has worked with a number of businesses to reach compliance, such as Genova Delicatessen in Napa. She said while they were hesitant to jump into the composting program at first, the gourmet Italian restaurant has been able to reduce its waste by half and saves hundreds of dollars every month!

More than 300 businesses are currently participating in the program, and your business can join them. The City will provide you with green carts and bins for disposing food waste, signage and decals to reinforce the program as well as training and guidance. Learn more about the program here.

Some Recycling & Composting Tips:

Cardboard is not the only recyclable thing in your kitchen! You can also recycle metal cans and rigid plastics (Note: Soft plastics are not recyclable)
Do a quick rinse of metal cans before placing them in the recycling bin
Regularly clean composting bins and carts
Make composting training a part of new employee orientation
