Commemorating Juneteenth Juneteenth commemorates the date—June 19, 1865, two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation and two months after the end of the Civil War—when hundreds of thousands of enslaved men and women in Texas finally learned they had been freed.
This past Thursday, we welcomed Johnicon George, President of the Tri-City NAACP Chapter, and Jeannette McClendon, Coordinator, Professor and Counselor at Napa Valley College and leader of the Umoja Program, to say a few words alongside Mayor Scott Sedgley and Councilmember Mary Luros in honor of the upcoming holiday.
On Sunday, June 19th, we honor the promise of freedom, and we remind ourselves and others, that we must continue to work towards change today for a better tomorrow. Education, awareness, understanding and inclusivity are all keys to a brighter future.
“Juneteenth has never been a celebration of victory or an acceptance of the way things are. It’s a celebration of progress. It’s an affirmation that despite the most painful parts of our history, change is possible—and there is still so much work to do.” —Barack Obama
